Statement from the network champions of Birmingham’s Third Sector Assembly

4th November 2011

We wish to put on record our concerns that a further £3.8 million could be cut from the Supporting People budget. This option is currently being considered as part of Birmingham City Council’s budget consultation. It is our view that such a move would be extremely damaging to Birmingham’s social fabric, and furthermore would be in direct contradiction of the Council’s stated priority of protecting vulnerable people in this city.

We do not underestimate the challenge currently being faced by members and officers of the local authority, who must find an additional £65 million of savings following the recent outcome of the Judicial Review on proposed cuts to the Adults and Communities budget.

Ideal for All in Sandwell celebrated its 15th anniversary at its recent AGM. The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ann Shackleton with Carol Goff, Chair and Naeem Arif, Executive Director cut the cake to mark this significant milestone for the charity.

The event saw speeches from members who praised the support Ideal for All had given them in living independently. Councillor Bob Badham, Cabinet Member for Children and Families and Richard Nugent Chair of Sandwell Primary Care Trust (PCT) said that Ideal for All had achieved great things and hoped it would carry on supporting disabled people for many years to come.

The 250 guests were also treated to a variety of entertainment including bhangra dancers, a belly dancer, a local band called The Heels and a three-course dinner at the Platinum Plaza Old Hill.
